Artificial Intelligence is rapidly permeating diverse aspects of modern life, influencing sectors from healthcare and finance to entertainment and transportation. Its increasing sophistication promises transformative potential, automating tasks, augmenting human capabilities, and offering new modes of problem-solving. However, this rapid integration is accompanied by growing ethical scrutiny. Concerns regarding fairness, accountability, transparency, bias, and the broader societal impacts of AI systems have moved to the forefront of research and public discourse. Within this landscape of ethical considerations, a subtle yet pervasive challenge emerges: anthropocentric bias. Broadly understood, anthropocentrism is a worldview that places humans at the center of value and concern, often viewing the non-human world primarily through the lens of human interests. In the context of AI, anthropocentric bias refers to the systematic embedding of human perspectives, cognitive frameworks, values, biological limitations, and experiential assumptions into the design, development, training, and evaluation of AI systems. These systems, created by humans using human-generated data, often end up reflecting not just our explicit goals but also our implicit biases and limitations.



This bias presents a complex relationship with the concept of Human-Centered AI (HCAI). HCAI is often proposed as an ethical framework aiming to align AI development with human needs, values, and well-being, ensuring technology serves as a collaborative tool rather than replacing or diminishing human roles. Its principles emphasize empathy, user involvement, ethical considerations, transparency, and augmenting human capabilities. However, a critical examination reveals a potential tension: an uncritical application of "human-centered" principles can inadvertently lead to anthropocentric bias. If "human-centered" is interpreted merely as prioritizing human perspectives, using only human data, or optimizing for human-like performance, it risks neglecting non-human considerations, assuming human cognition is the sole valid model of intelligence, and embedding human limitations as systemic flaws. This occurs because the default methods for building HCAI often rely heavily on human data and benchmarks, which can encode anthropocentric viewpoints. This narrow focus can undermine broader ethical goals, particularly concerning the environment and non-human life, and paradoxically, can even limit AI's utility for humans by constraining its problem-solving approaches to familiar, human-like methods. Thus, HCAI, while ethically motivated towards human well-being, must be carefully implemented to avoid collapsing into a limiting anthropocentrism. It should ethically prioritize relevant human interests without assuming human experience is the exclusive source of data, value, or intelligence. This article argues that anthropocentric bias in AI constitutes a distinct and significant challenge. It extends beyond simple anthropomorphism (attributing human qualities to machines) to fundamentally shape AI's capabilities, limitations, and impacts. This bias restricts AI's potential to understand and interact with the non-human world, reinforces problematic assumptions of human exceptionalism, limits innovation, and carries substantial ethical and ecological risks. Addressing it requires moving beyond surface-level adjustments towards a critical examination of the data, design goals, evaluation metrics, and underlying philosophical assumptions guiding AI development.


This article will proceed as follows: Section 2 defines anthropocentric bias in AI more precisely, differentiating it from related concepts and presenting a taxonomy of its forms. Section 3 illustrates how this bias manifests across key AI domains like computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. Section 4 investigates the root causes, examining the roles of training data, design goals, and evaluation benchmarks. Section 5 analyzes the multifaceted consequences and ethical ramifications, particularly concerning non-human systems and worldviews. Section 6 explores potential mitigation strategies, including non-human-centric datasets, alternative AI architectures, and expanded evaluation methods. Understanding anthropocentric bias requires a clear definition within the AI context, distinguishing it from related concepts like anthropomorphism and critically examining its relationship with Human-Centered AI (HCAI).


2.1. Conceptualizing Anthropocentrism in AI


Anthropocentric bias in Artificial Intelligence can be defined as the systematic skewing of AI system design, function, training, and evaluation based predominantly or exclusively on human perspectives, cognitive frameworks, biological attributes, cultural values, and lived experiences. This bias often involves treating these human characteristics as universal, superior, or the sole relevant benchmarks for intelligence and performance. It manifests through various pathways, including the reliance on human-generated data, the prioritization of human-like intelligence or interaction styles as design goals, the development of applications tailored solely to human problems, and the use of evaluation metrics centered on human capabilities or preferences. It is crucial to distinguish anthropocentric bias from anthropomorphism. Anthropomorphism is the tendency to attribute human-like qualities, such as consciousness, intentions, emotions, or specific ways of understanding, to non-human entities, including AI systems, often without sufficient empirical justification. Examples include saying an LLM "understands" text in a human way or attributing feelings to a robot based on its design. Anthropocentric bias, conversely, is less about attributing internal states and more about using human standards as the primary or exclusive measure for evaluating AI's competence, design validity, or overall value. While anthropomorphism focuses on what we project onto AI (human qualities), anthropocentric bias focuses on how we judge AI (using human benchmarks and frameworks). It represents a deeper, more systemic bias embedded in the philosophy and methodology of AI development and evaluation, often manifesting as an assumption that human ways of thinking or solving problems are the only, or the best, ways. The relationship with Human-Centered AI (HCAI) is nuanced. As noted earlier, HCAI aims to create AI systems that prioritize human needs, values, capabilities, and well-being. Principles of HCAI often include involving users, ensuring ethical alignment (fairness, privacy, non-discrimination for humans), enhancing human abilities, and promoting transparency for human understanding. While laudable, this focus can inadvertently foster anthropocentric bias if "human-centered" is interpreted narrowly as "human-perspective-exclusive". If the needs prioritized are only human needs, if the values embedded are only human values derived from biased data, if the capabilities enhanced are only human ones measured against human benchmarks, and if transparency is solely for human interpretation, then HCAI risks becoming a vehicle for anthropocentrism. It may fail to consider the intrinsic value or interests of non-human entities or the health of the broader ecosystem, except where these directly impact human concerns.


2.2. A Taxonomy of Anthropocentric Biases in AI Systems


Anthropocentric bias is not monolithic; it manifests in various forms throughout the AI lifecycle. Building on existing research, we can identify several distinct types:


  • Type-I Anthropocentrism (Performance Fallacy): This bias involves overlooking how auxiliary factors unrelated to core competence can impede an AI's performance on a given task. When an LLM, for instance, fails a task designed to test a specific cognitive ability, a Type-I bias leads to the conclusion that the LLM lacks that ability. This ignores potential confounding factors such as poorly worded instructions, restrictive output formats, computational constraints, or interference from other processes within the model, which might mask underlying competence.

  • Type-II Anthropocentrism (Methodological Chauvinism): This bias occurs when an AI system achieves or surpasses human-level performance on a task, but its success is dismissed or devalued because the underlying mechanism or strategy differs significantly from human cognitive processes. It assumes that genuine competence must resemble human competence in its method, not just its outcome. This reflects a belief that "all cognitive kinds are human cognitive kinds" and dismisses potentially valid, albeit non-human-like, solutions as somehow less intelligent or generalizable. An AI learning a novel, non-human algorithm for addition might be seen as not truly competent at addition under this bias.

  • Semantic Anthropocentrism: Closely related to Type-II bias, this is the tendency to define a cognitive capacity or trait based on its distinctively human expression, without adequate theoretical justification. It assumes the human way of manifesting a trait is the only valuable or legitimate way. For example, defining cognitive mapping solely in terms of visual navigation overlooks the possibility of animals like bats or dolphins creating sophisticated spatial maps using echolocation. This limits our ability to recognize diverse forms of cognition.

  • Data Anthropocentrism: This bias arises directly from the nature of the data used to train AI models. Since most large datasets are generated by humans, capture human activities, are labeled according to human categories, or describe human environments, the AI learns a world model heavily skewed towards human experience and priorities.This includes not only social biases present in human society but also biases reflecting human sensory limitations, cognitive shortcuts, and cultural preoccupations. The relative lack of non-human data exacerbates this.

  • Goal Anthropocentrism: This bias stems from the objectives set for AI development. Often, the explicit or implicit goal is to create AI that exhibits human-like intelligence, interacts seamlessly with humans, or solves problems defined purely from a human perspective. This focus on human mimicry or utility naturally leads to designs and functionalities centered on human norms and capabilities, potentially neglecting other forms of intelligence or applications relevant to non-human systems.

  • Evaluation Anthropocentrism: This bias is embedded in the methods used to measure AI success. When evaluation relies primarily on human benchmarks, human judgments, human-centric datasets, or tests designed to assess human-like performance (like the Turing Test), it reinforces an anthropocentric standard. AI systems optimized for these metrics may excel at human mimicry but lack deeper understanding or capabilities relevant outside these narrow, human-defined contexts.


These different facets of anthropocentric bias are often deeply interconnected. The reliance on human-centric data (Data Anthropocentrism) naturally encourages goals aimed at replicating human performance or interaction (Goal Anthropocentrism). Success is then measured against human standards (Evaluation Anthropocentrism). This entire pipeline makes the evaluation process susceptible to misinterpretations: poor performance on human-specific tasks might be wrongly attributed to a lack of competence (Type-I bias), while successful but non-human-like strategies are dismissed as invalid or un-intelligent (Type-II bias), often because the very definition of the competence being measured is tied to its human manifestation (Semantic Anthropocentrism). This creates a feedback loop where AI development remains tethered to human models, potentially limiting its capacity to engage with or understand non-human domains and hindering the discovery of novel, non-human-like forms of intelligence.

Anthropocentric bias permeates various AI applications, subtly shaping how these systems perceive, interpret, communicate, and interact with the world. Examining specific domains like computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics reveals concrete examples of this bias in action.


3.1. Computer Vision: Seeing Through a Human Eye


Computer vision (CV) systems aim to enable machines to "see" and interpret visual information. However, their vision is often filtered through an anthropocentric lens, shaped by the data they learn from and the tasks they are designed for. A prominent example is the texture versus shape bias observed in Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) trained on large datasets like ImageNet. Research has shown that while humans strongly prioritize shape for object recognition, standard CNNs often rely heavily on texture cues. This occurs because textures within ImageNet, a dataset largely composed of images taken and categorized by humans, can be highly discriminative for the specific object classes represented. CNNs, optimizing for classification accuracy on this dataset, learn to exploit these textural patterns, even if it means deviating from human perceptual strategies. This difference can be exploited by adversarial examples – images slightly modified in ways imperceptible to humans that cause dramatic misclassifications by CNNs, suggesting the models haven't acquired the same robust category knowledge as humans. While these models might match or exceed human performance on standard ImageNet tasks, their reliance on different cues reveals an underlying difference in visual processing shaped by the anthropocentric nature of the training data. The biases inherent in foundational datasets like ImageNet are themselves illustrative of data anthropocentrism. ImageNet's content reflects human photographic habits – subjects tend to be centered, and certain subjects like domestic animals may be over-represented. More significantly, the initial categorization scheme inherited from WordNet included numerous person categories that were offensive, sensitive, or based on non-visual attributes (like religion or origin), reflecting linguistic rather than visual distinctions. Efforts have been made to filter these problematic categories and address demographic inequalities (underrepresentation of darker skin tones, females, older adults) that arose from relying on biased web search results and crowdsourced annotations. Furthermore, the creation of Stylized-ImageNet (SIN), where original textures are replaced with artistic styles, was an attempt to force CNNs to learn shape-based representations, effectively trying to make the AI "see" more like humans. The very existence of these issues and mitigation efforts highlights how human social biases, categorization schemes, and even aesthetic choices become embedded technical artifacts within CV systems.


This human-centric training limits AI's ability to interpret visual information outside of human frameworks. AI might struggle to analyze drawings made by non-human animals, requiring specialized approaches, or fail to interpret natural scenes from an ecocentric rather than a human-utilitarian perspective. An AI trained to judge aesthetics based on human preferences, often reflecting specific cultural norms, might undervalue or misinterpret art forms or natural beauty that don't conform to those standards. Interestingly, anthropocentrism also influences human perception of AI's visual outputs. Studies on AI-generated art show a pervasive bias against it; people prefer the same artwork less when told it was made by AI versus a human. This bias is stronger among individuals holding "anthropocentric creativity beliefs" – the conviction that creativity is a uniquely human trait. Such individuals perceive AI art as less creative and experience less awe, suggesting a psychological defense mechanism to preserve human uniqueness in the face of AI advancements. This societal bias reflects a broader anthropocentrism that impacts the reception and valuation of AI's creative potential. The biases observed in computer vision, stemming from datasets reflecting human choices and perceptual habits, demonstrate a critical point: human-centric perspectives deeply embedded in training data become technical limitations. These limitations constrain the AI's ability to generalize beyond human contexts or to perceive the visual world in ways that might differ from, yet be as valid as, human vision. Even efforts to correct these biases, like inducing shape bias, often aim to align the AI more closely with human perception, potentially overlooking other effective, non-human ways of processing visual information.


3.2. Natural Language Processing: Language Reflecting Human Priorities


Natural Language Processing (NLP) aims to enable computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable success in generating human-like text. However, because they are trained on vast corpora of text generated by humans, they inevitably absorb and reflect human linguistic patterns, societal norms, cultural values, and inherent biases, including anthropocentrism. A well-documented manifestation is the perpetuation of human social biases. LLMs often reproduce stereotypes related to gender, race, religion, socioeconomic status, and other social categories found in their training data. For example, models might associate certain professions more strongly with one gender (e.g., "doctor" with "he") or link specific racial groups with criminality, reflecting historical and societal inequalities present in the text data. These biases can persist even in models that have undergone alignment processes aimed at reducing harmful outputs, suggesting the biases are deeply embedded. Measuring these biases is challenging, requiring sophisticated methods beyond simple explicit tests, such as adaptations of psychological tests like the Implicit Association Test (IAT) for LLMs. Beyond reflecting social prejudices, NLP models also encode a more fundamental anthropocentric worldview embedded within human language itself. Studies show that LLMs like GPT-4o tend to describe non-human animals, plants, and natural elements primarily in terms of their utility or relationship to humans. Animals are often defined by their role in food production ("livestock," "raised for food"), companion animals receive more empathetic consideration than farmed animals or invertebrates, and natural elements like rivers or mountains are framed by their value for human civilization, resource extraction, or recreation. This reflects and reinforces "utilitarian anthropocentrism," a perspective common in Western cultures that views nature primarily as a resource for human use. This perspective is embedded in linguistic practices, such as categorizing animals based on their function for humans (pets, livestock, pests) or using passive voice to obscure human agency in actions like slaughtering animals.


Furthermore, the reasoning capabilities of LLMs can also exhibit anthropocentric tendencies. While LLMs show promise in abstract reasoning, their performance is often influenced by "content effects" similar to those seen in humans – they tend to reason more accurately about familiar, believable situations grounded in human experience compared to abstract or unfamiliar contexts. Their approach to logic problems can differ from human patterns, sometimes performing better, sometimes worse, but demonstrating that their reasoning is intertwined with the semantic content learned from human text. The focus on generating fluent, human-like text might also obscure alternative forms of reasoning or "understanding" that are not easily expressed in human language patterns. The manifestation of anthropocentric bias in NLP is therefore twofold. It involves the replication of human social biases, reflecting inequalities within human societies. More profoundly, it involves the encoding and perpetuation of a human-centric worldview, particularly a utilitarian perspective towards the non-human world, which is deeply woven into the fabric of the language the AI learns. This occurs because LLMs learn from human text, which reflects not only social structures but also dominant cultural assumptions about humanity's place in the world, including instrumental views of nature. Consequently, interacting with these LLMs can subtly reinforce these anthropocentric and utilitarian viewpoints in users, normalizing a perspective that devalues non-human entities.


3.3. Robotics: Designing Machines in Our Image


Robotics frequently employs anthropomorphic (human-like) or zoomorphic (animal-like) designs. Humanoid robots used in retail, service robots in automated hotels, and even functional robots given names and treated like companions by users illustrate this trend. The motivations are often pragmatic: leveraging humans' natural tendency to anthropomorphize can facilitate smoother interaction, increase user acceptance, and allow robots to operate in human environments or fulfill social roles. People tend to apply social scripts and heuristics learned from human-human interaction to robots exhibiting human-like cues (the "computers are social actors" paradigm). However, this reliance on anthropomorphic design introduces specific biases and limitations. The tendency to perceive human-like robots as social agents can lead to misplaced trustworthiness, where users overestimate the capabilities or reliability of a system, as seen in cases involving Tesla's Autopilot. Anthropomorphic cues also trigger gender stereotyping; studies show that more anthropomorphic robots, particularly those with functional manipulators, are often perceived as male, likely due to societal associations between masculinity, technology, and physical capability. This "male-robot bias" can be reinforced by grammatically gendered language (e.g., if the word "robot" is masculine) but also exists in natural gender languages, suggesting a deeper cultural link between technology and masculinity. Robots may be assigned gendered tasks based on stereotypes (e.g., female robots for caregiving). Furthermore, strong emotional attachments can form, with users experiencing grief when a robot "companion" needs repair or feeling empathy when robots are depicted in distress, sometimes leading to decisions that prioritize the robot's "well-being" even in simulated or inappropriate contexts.


Designing robots based on human morphology may also be suboptimal for many tasks. The human form is adapted for specific terrestrial environments and modes of interaction. Robots intended for complex navigation in non-human terrains, interaction with diverse animal species, or operation in extreme environments (e.g., deep sea, space) might be better served by radically different, potentially bio-inspired but non-humanoid, forms. Over-reliance on the human template (Goal Anthropocentrism) limits design possibilities. Ethical concerns also arise specifically from anthropomorphic design. Social robots are sometimes criticized as a "cheating" technology, creating an illusion of social reciprocity and potentially manipulating users emotionally. The automatic application of social schemas to machines can distort consumer behavior and impede rational decision-making. The prevalence of anthropomorphic design in robotics, therefore, exemplifies how anthropocentric bias can manifest physically. While intended to bridge the human-robot divide, it inherently embeds human physical characteristics and social expectations into machines. This carries implicit assumptions about the "ideal" form for an intelligent agent being human-like. This not only risks limiting robotic functionality in non-human contexts but also raises distinct ethical challenges related to gender stereotyping, misplaced trust, emotional manipulation, and the potential reinforcement of human forms as the default for advanced artifacts.

It may constrain our imagination regarding the diverse forms intelligent machines could take.

4. Investigating the Roots: Why AI Becomes Anthropocentric


The prevalence of anthropocentric bias in AI is not accidental but stems from fundamental aspects of how AI systems are currently developed, trained, and evaluated. Three primary root causes can be identified: the nature of training data, the objectives guiding AI design, and the benchmarks used to measure success.


4.1. The Foundation: Human-Generated Data and Its Limitations


AI, particularly machine learning, is fundamentally data-driven. Models learn patterns, correlations, and representations from the data they are exposed to. A primary driver of anthropocentric bias is the overwhelming reliance on data generated by humans, reflecting human activities, languages, cultural norms, societal structures, and cognitive patterns. This data acts as a mirror, reflecting not only intended information but also inherent human biases – both explicit social prejudices related to race, gender, etc., and more subtle perceptual or cognitive biases, such as the tendencies reflected in image datasets. Compounding this issue is the relative scarcity and difficulty of obtaining large-scale, high-quality data representing non-human perspectives, environments, or communication systems. While data from environmental sensors or animal tracking exists, interpreting it, labeling it appropriately (especially without imposing human categories), and ensuring it is comprehensive enough for training complex models presents significant challenges. The sounds whales make or the chemical signals plants emit are forms of information, but collecting and translating them into formats usable by current AI architectures, without anthropocentric interpretation, is non-trivial.


Furthermore, the processes of data collection, annotation, and curation themselves are susceptible to human choices that introduce or amplify bias. The selection of data sources (e.g., relying on web searches for ImageNet, which have their own biases), the instructions given to human annotators, and the criteria used for cleaning data can all embed specific viewpoints. The phenomenon of "degenerative AI" or model collapse, where AI models trained recursively on their own synthetic output tend towards homogenized and potentially biased content, further highlights the risks associated with data generation and curation processes if not carefully managed with diverse, high-quality inputs. This fundamental reliance on easily accessible, voluminous human-generated data creates a skewed foundation for AI. The models learn a representation of the world that is inevitably filtered through the lens of human experience, perception, and preoccupation. This constitutes Data Anthropocentrism, where the very building blocks of AI knowledge are inherently human-centric. Overcoming this requires not just debiasing human data but making a concerted, challenging effort to actively seek, generate, interpret, and incorporate data that reflects non-human realities and perspectives.


4.2. Design Imperatives: The Drive Towards Human-Like Intelligence and Interaction


A second major root cause is the set of goals and assumptions guiding AI design. Historically and currently, a significant portion of AI research has focused on achieving human-level or human-like intelligence, often using human capabilities as the ultimate benchmark. This stems partly from the fact that humans provide the only undisputed example of general intelligence we know, making human cognition a natural, albeit potentially limiting, reference point. Many AI applications are explicitly designed for human contexts – to augment human abilities, assist in human tasks, facilitate human communication, or provide services to human users. This practical focus naturally leads developers to prioritize AI systems that can understand human language, reason in human-compatible ways, and interact according to human social norms. The principles of HCAI, while aiming for ethical outcomes, often reinforce this focus on human usability and collaboration. Underlying these practical drivers are often implicit philosophical assumptions that equate intelligence with human intelligence. Human cognitive abilities like abstract reasoning, language, and planning are frequently held up as the defining features of intelligence, potentially overlooking or devaluing the diverse forms of intelligence manifested in other biological organisms or potentially achievable by artificial systems. This perspective treats human intelligence as the "gold standard", rather than one specific point in a broader space of possible intelligences.


Commercial factors also play a role. Market demand often favors AI that can be easily integrated into existing human workflows, provide intuitive user interfaces, or deliver human-like customer service, further incentivizing the development of anthropomorphic systems. This convergence of research history, application focus, philosophical assumptions, and market pressures results in Goal Anthropocentrism. The objective often becomes building AI in the image of humans, either in capability or interaction style. While necessary for many human-facing applications, this inherent directionality steers development towards models that excel within human frameworks but may be brittle or suboptimal outside them.

It risks neglecting alternative, potentially more powerful or efficient, non-human-like approaches to problem-solving (falling prey to Type-II bias) and reinforces the potentially flawed notion that human intelligence is the only form of intelligence that truly matters.

4.3. Measuring Success: The Problem with Human-Centric Benchmarks and Metrics


The third critical factor driving anthropocentric bias lies in how AI progress and performance are measured. Evaluation in AI frequently relies on benchmarks and metrics centered on human capabilities, judgments, or data reflecting human priorities. While comparing AI to humans can serve as a useful initial reference point or "investigative kind", an over-reliance on human standards as the definitive measure of success becomes deeply problematic. The Turing Test stands as a classic example of an anthropocentric benchmark. Its explicit goal is to determine if a machine can imitate human conversational behavior convincingly enough to deceive a human judge. This focus on imitation neglects deeper questions of genuine understanding, consciousness, creativity, or emotional intelligence. Passing the test demonstrates successful mimicry, not necessarily intelligence in a broader sense, and it inherently encourages deceptive capabilities over transparent functionality. Furthermore, its reliance on language biases the evaluation towards one specific modality of intelligence, and the subjective judgment of the human evaluator introduces variability and potential bias. While historically significant, its limitations highlight the pitfalls of defining AI success solely through human comparison.


Beyond specific tests, many standard evaluation metrics incorporate human-centric assumptions. Performance on image classification benchmarks like ImageNet is judged against human accuracy or based on human-defined categories. Metrics like BLEU or ROUGE for machine translation and summarization measure similarity to human-produced reference texts. Even newer methods using AI-as-a-judge, where one AI evaluates another, often rely on criteria derived from human preferences or task definitions, and these judge models themselves can exhibit biases (e.g., positional bias, verbosity bias) learned from their own human-centric training. When AI systems are optimized to perform well on these human-derived metrics (Evaluation Anthropocentrism), their development trajectory is steered towards replicating human performance on human-defined tasks.


A significant gap exists in established methodologies for evaluating AI performance on tasks relevant to non-human systems or using criteria that are not solely based on human benchmarks. How do we measure an AI's ability to accurately model an ecosystem's dynamics, understand animal communication on its own terms, or design solutions inspired by non-human biological processes?
